What Are Cataracts?

"What is a cataract?" is a question which has been asked many times throughout history by people who face deteriorating vision due initially to an increased glare. Once it becomes obvious that there s something long term which is going wrong, there is a need to quickly ascertain the nature of the problem so that it can be dealt with, although if the problem is cataract it will not be immediately possible to begin treating it. The type of operation procedure which has successfully dealt with cataracts throughout recent history is still used, but technology is improving constantly.

The simple fact is that cataracts are due to the growing opacity within the lens of the eye, making vision difficult, and objects appear blurred even when a person has no other eye difficulty such as long or short sight. What causes this opacity to form in the first place is not known, although it has been postulated by many practitioners of natural medicine that it is due to a steady build up of toxic material within the body. The theory is that as processed unnatural food is taken into the body the digestive and eliminatory systems are unable to deal with it, and residues are directed to the extremities of the body.

This is the same theory which is used to explain phenomena such as arthritis and rheumatism, but it is yet to be acknowledged by the medical profession. However, there are many practitioners of natural medicine who treat cataract with a natural diet and detoxification of the body, believing that this will allow the eye to heal naturally. Even if this theory was proven accurate, there would still be a point beyond which the cataract could not be reversed, and therefore still a need for advanced surgical techniques.

Ear Cataracts

These natural treatments can still be applied by anyone who is wondering what is a cataract and what is simply a temporary problem caused by sensitivity to light, as they will if anything improve the health of the entire body in any case. They can be used to delay the onset of the opacity, which can be useful in elderly patients as there is a possibility that they may be able to see out their life without the need to operate. In other cases the onset can be delayed, although the opacity will need to harden before it can be surgically removed.

Most cataracts are removed by surgical operation, as this is now a procedure with incredibly low risk considering that it is the eyes which are being operated upon, and which has a very high success rate. The growth which is causing the sight difficulty is removed completely, so the operation will be a success unless there are complications. The potential for these has been greatly reduced by the introduction of phacoemulsification, a technique which allows the surgeon to operate with a local anesthetic, and with small incisions such as those used in keyhole surgery.

One it can be determined what is a cataract and what is a light problem which needs other types of treatment the cataracts can begin to be treated. As there is a long time between the discovery of the cataract and the operation taking place there is plenty of time to prepare. If you have standard medical insurance the operation should be covered, but only to the extent of having a replacement lens with a limited ability to accommodate. The higher quality modern lenses which give the patient a far more natural vision can only be obtained by paying extra money.

Recovery time from the operation is usually very short, as it is not even invasive enough to warrant an overnight stay in hospital. The eye will be able to see within hours of the operation taking place, although there may be a further adjustment time before perfect vision is possible. Eye drops are usually prescribed to help the eye return to normal operation without soreness, and there may also be a need to wear a patch for a short time. The eye still needs to ease itself back into its role gently, so if you feel a soreness make sure that you stop and rest for a time.

The diagnostic equipment which can determine what is a cataract and the surgical techniques which can treat and remove them are all improving constantly with technology, and there are many possibilities for improvements still to come. There is a need for phacoemulsification techniques to spread throughout the world so that more operations can be completed sooner and with less risk, and there is further development possible to replacement lenses so that post operative vision will be improved. Diagnostics can also get better yet, as physicians carrying out a routine check up need to be able to determine what is a cataract.
